John Williams, southeastern fishery biologist for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, holds up the results of a smallmouth bass fishing trip this past January on Laurel River Lake. The smallmouth on the left weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces, the largest Williams ever caught. The lake consistently produces smallmouth bass like these, but the lake can be tough to fish. A day with heavy overcast skies and light rain this spring would be an ideal time to try for trophy smallmouth bass on Laurel River Lake.
