Ace, the Llewellin Setter with the funny curly hair on top of his head, was a bundle of energy from the moment I got him. As a pup, he quickly learned the commands to be a bird dog. His keen intelligence and eager spirit made him a quick learner, and it didn’t take long for him to become a grouse dog.
Ace’s distinctive curly hair atop his head became his trademark, earning him countless compliments and curious looks from strangers. It was a source of endless amusement for us, a testament to his unique charm.

But it was Ace’s natural talent as a hunting dog that truly set him apart. Every year, we eagerly anticipated our trips to Wisconsin for the grouse season, and Ace was just as excited as I was. As soon as we arrived at the cabin in the heart of the Northwoods, he knew it was time to shine. His enthusiasm was exceptional, and his instincts were unmatched.
Ace’s ability to point out the elusive grouse was nothing short of remarkable. He moved through the dense underbrush with grace and precision, his nose leading the way. It was as if he could smell those birds from miles away. He’d freeze in place, one paw raised, his body perfectly still, alerting me to the presence of a grouse nearby. It was during those moments that you could truly appreciate the intelligence and intensity of this exceptional dog.
Ace was agile and swift in the field, a true hunter at heart. He had a knack for pointing birds. As the sound of wings flapping and the rush of feathers filled the air, Ace would remain steady, watching the sky and waiting for the shot. It was like magic, the way he worked with me in perfect harmony.
Over the years, our adventures in Wisconsin brought us countless memories. The thrill of the hunt and the camaraderie with friends centered around Ace. He was more than a hunting dog; he was a member of our family and a loyal friend who added immeasurable joy to our lives.
But as the seasons passed, age began to catch up with Ace. His once boundless energy began to slow, but his experience made the trips to Wisconsin more bountiful. It was a sad day when I realized his hunting days were behind him. I knew it was time to let Ace rest, to honor his years of dedication and cherish the memories we had made together.
This year was Ace’s last trip to the Northwoods. I brought Ace home to a quiet corner of our property, where he loved running and playing. As I laid him to rest, I couldn’t help but shed tears for my beloved Llewellin Setter with the funny curly hair on top of his head. I thanked him for the countless hours of joy he had given me, his unwavering loyalty, and for being the best grouse dog anyone could have asked for.
Even though Ace is gone, his memory will live on in the stories I share and the pictures I took on our hunts. He has left a mark on our hearts, a testament to the incredible bond between a dog and his human companion. Ace was more than just a dog; he was a beloved friend, and his legacy will forever be etched in our souls.
