Weather stymies KBF tournament on Grayson Lake

The Kentucky B.A.S.S. Federation Grayson Lake Tournament

By Chris Erwin

On Saturday, May 11, members of the Kentucky Bass Federation converged on Grayson Lake to test the waters and themselves to see who would prevail on this tough lake. The weather wouldn’t do anyone any favors, as the cold snap and overcast day would prove to stump some of the best anglers in the area. However, you can always count on someone to figure out how to put fish in the boat and these guys were no exception.

In this tournament, they were two types of anglers: the boater angler, and the co-angler or non-boater. The boater anglers caught a total of 12 fish totaling 30.29 lbs. The non-boaters, which refers to the fact that they typically get the rear of the boat at least the first half of the day, caught six fish totaling 13.20 lbs. This is not considered a good day but the conditions were far from ideal.

They were 18 boats with two anglers to a boat. They were not fishing as a team. The anglers embarked out on the fog lifting water in the early hours of the morning to test their skills against each other. We waited near the scales as we watched the boats roll into the dock. It was 2:30 p.m. and the cloud-covered sky had no breaks as the nippy breeze gave testament to the less than perfect day they all endured on the water.

The expressions on many of their faces were just as gray as the sky. It didn’t take long to discover many of them had empty livewells. I watched them pull their boats out of the water, and every now and then I could see a smile creep across some of their faces.

The big winner in this tournament was Richard Cobb, who came to the scales with three fish totaling 8 pounds and 29 ounces. The next guy in total weight was co-angler Joey Vonhoene. He came to the scales with two fish totaling 4.92 pounds. Third and fourth place would be just a matter of a few ounces. These winners were: Mike Mays with 3.98 pounds and Kyle Christopher with 3.94 pounds.

We want to congratulate all the anglers who brought in fish and managed to qualify for upcoming events.

Cave Run Kid’s Fishing Derby June 1

Imagine catching a monster 6-pound bass, 8-pound catfish, or a 2-pound crappie as a child!  You can make this dream come true for a youngster by bringing them to the Cave Run Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 1.  Children ages 1 to 15, accompanied by an adult, are invited to participate. No fishing license is required.

The fun begins at 6:30 am and ends around 11:00 am at the Minor E. Clark Fish Hatchery on KY Highway 801 South. The ponds are stocked with large numbers of rainbow trout, channel catfish, along with largemouth bass and crappie to be fished by children attending the event.  Youngsters should plan to bring a fishing rod, tackle, and a cooler for keeping their catch fresh, as well as lawn chairs to sit on.  A variety of fishing baits will be provided and there will be a limited number of fishing poles available for children who need to borrow one.

Volunteers will be on hand to clean and fillet each child’s catch at no charge. There will be free food, games, displays, and prizes.  Every child also receives a goody bag and a free t-shirt.  Kids will want to wake up early for this amazing event.
