Editor’s note: Most of this week has been mild, and many of the reports were good. However, this weekend has turned cold as the front moved in. This hurt the fishing but if temperatures return to the low 60’s the fishing should pick up. If you get on the water in the next week drop me a line and let me know how you did. chris@ashlandbeacon.com
Cave Run Lake: The Lake fell very little this week as the water level is just .7 feet above winter pool, with less than one foot to reach winter pool water levels in the river make the river dangerous if you don’t know the channel. Please stay safe and go slow! Musky: The musky continue to remain active for short periods, fish weed edges, laydown timber and Creek heads. Baits that continue to see actions this week were gliders, jerkbaits and inline spinners. Bass: Smallmouth: The smallmouth has been active on jigs and live bait in the dam area fish the rip-rap areas where the sun is warming the water in the middle of the day. Largemouth Bass: The bass reports continue to be slow this week. We only had a few reports of bass activity; fish were the most active in the middle of the day fishing the sunny side in the heads of coves that were holding shad, use crankbaits, spinnerbaits and topwater jerk baits. White Bass: remain on the flats and Creek heads where shad are schooling, use small crankbaits, small inline spinners and blade baits. Crappie: We continue to get reports of crappie being taken on live bait fishing channel trees as well as crankbaits in some schooling shad near the heads of creeks.
Grayson Lake: We didn’t have any new reports on this lake this week. However, we don’t feel much has changed; our reporting people for this lake were deer hunting this week and will continue hunting until the 25th. Bass: reported slow this week; jigs and spinnerbaits were the only baits that reported any success. Crappie: fair, fishing swim jigs around down timber, let the jig fall into the 10 to the 12-foot range; yellow 1/8 jigs have had the best success for the last few weeks. Catfish: I didn’t receive any catfish reports this week; however, we believe these fish are still active.
Greenbo Lake: The Lake is in good shape clear and stable. Bass: Reports of bass this week were fair some fish were taken on spending jerk baits around laydown trees in the middle of the day. Trout: Greenbo was stocked on the 11th of Oct. we have had many good reports of the trout still hitting; Berkley Power Bait and salmon eggs have been the hot bait for these fish. Catfish: slow, catfish was reported as slow this week fishing very early and mid-day, fish live bait, chubs, small bluegill and cut bait.
Ohio River: Fishing was good on the river this week, the sauger have been hot! White bass: reported good, watching for breaking fish in the mouth of creeks use inline spinners and small crankbaits. Largemouth Bass: good, using jigs around rocky areas, locating shad will improve your odds. Below the Dam: Sauger and Walleye returning water levels has improved the sauger and walleye success. Twin tail grubs on 1/4oz. Ball jigs are beginning to produce, using a slow bump the bottom retrieves. Stripe Bass: we had some reports this week that the strippers were still in the damn area and while they haven’t been breaking the surface fish are still being taken by using swim baits, making long cast in the same areas where fish were active on pencil poppers. Bass: above the dam has been slow this week. Some fish were reported taken on lipless crankbaits fishing coves that are holding shad. Catfish: fair. Reports of catfish have been slow this week. However, some fish were taken fishing live bait under slip bobbers near the bottom in back water areas.
Yatesville Lake: Fishing report on this lake remains slow this week as our reporting people were deer hunting. If you fished this lake this week drop me a line and tell me how you did. Bass reported slow this week, spinnerbaits and crankbaits fishing areas where shad are schooling will be your best bet for success. Crappie: good. Fish the edges of flats in channel bends and old fish attractors using 32 oz. white crappie jigs tipped with live minnows. We have also had some reports of catches fishing at night under lights using live bait, reports suggest the crappie are in 15 feet of water near channel points. Reports and pictures of your catch can be submitted to: chris@ashlandbeacon.com or trimmer308@windstream.net
