This fishing report was compiled for the week of Aug. 21, 2013

Editor’s note: While the Ohio River continues to stay in flux, with thunderstorms causing flash flooding in some areas; this water usually ends up in the river. However, the cloudy cooler than normal temperatures are slowly bringing down water temperatures. While mid-day sunny periods have pushed water temperatures into the 80s, low-light periods, especially morning temperatures, are being reported in the mid-70s. This has sparked both bass and muskie to becoming active.chris@ashlandbeacon.com

Cave Run Lake: Cave Run is just .4 feet over summer pool. Creeks and head-water areas are stained; however, most of the lake, including the river is in good shape. Falling water temperatures have sparked both bass and muskie to become active in low-light periods. Musky: The fishing pictured this week show cases Shan Horsley holding a 49-inch muskie the back story is him, and his buddy boated for muskie all in the 40s, fishing early-morning periods; baits this week that seen action are spinnerbaits, crankbaits, gliders and swimbaits. Largemouth Bass: While the size and types of baits may be different the low-light periods fishing summer patterns have produced results this week; baits this week have been crankbaits; Senko’s and shakey head jigs. White Bass: We are getting no reports of white bass catches, if you happen to catch some white bass on this lake drop us, a line and tell us about it. Crappie: We are continuing to get reports of angler’s night fishing under lights with moderate success fishing live minnows at 18 to 25 feet near channel areas of the main lake. Catfish: Catfish has been active this week and continue to be producing, jug fishing and limb-lines both have reported fair/ good catches.

Grayson Lake: We had some reports this week of good catches of bass fishing the upper region of the lake. The water had been stable just over summer pool with creeks and the river developing stained stretches from quick rains. Bass: The bass fishing is reported good this week fishing 6’ trick worms on points and discharge areas. Early-morning low-light periods producing the best results. Crappie: fair to good, fishing swim jigs around down timber and brush piles. Crappie fishing is improving at night fishing under crappie lights using live bait. Catfish: reported good fishing spawning areas with night-crawlers and minnows and cut bait using jugs and limb lines.

Greenbo Lake: reported mostly unchanged this week, the lake was reporting the highest water temperatures; it is clear and stable water temperatures hitting the 80s have forced much of the fishing into the low-light periods and at night. Some topwater action while the water is slick in the hour just after dawn is starting to improve. Bass: The bass has been reported in summer patterns, many anglers are starting to fish this lake at night fishing Texas rigged worms, and jigs dressed with swim minnows. Trout: while the trout fishing has slowed, Greenbo will get a stocking of trout in October watch our report of the day and time. Catfish: It was reported as good this week fishing very early and after dark, fish live bait, chubs, small bluegill and cut bait. Bluegill: We got a few reports bluegill success fishing crickets, mill-worms and live night-crawlers.

Ohio River: Just when we think, the river is going to turn on an influx of water seem to upset the chances of good catches, The river temperature was the lowest of the reporting bodies of water at 76 degrees. Largemouth Bass: reports have been few on the river if you are fishing the river we would like to hear from you. Below the Dam: Sauger and Walleye Twin tail grubs on 1/4oz. Ball jigs are still the best producers, using a slow bump the bottom retrieves. We also got reports that running a two jig setup has been producing better strikes. One of the two baits needs to be a little off of the bottom. White Bass: are getting active as they begin to chase shad, some reports of schooling fish are starting to show up. Bass: We are looking for some new reports on the bass fishing above the dam if you get on the water help us out! Catfish: The Catfish has been active this week with reports of good catches in back water areas along with feeder creeks using live bait.

Yatesville Lake: Is also reporting falling temperature with low-light periods in the high 70s. The lake is clear and in good shape with improving conditions. Bass: The drop in temperature has once again improved the topwater action, the morning low-light period being the most productive. Spinnerbaits, crankbaits and jigs have also produced fish. Crappie: good and unchanged; fish the edges of flats in channel bends and old fish attractors using 32 oz. white crappie jigs or live bait, we have seen some anglers improving their odds by fishing low-light periods and at night. Bluegill: we didn’t receive any reports on the bluegill this week. Catfish: The catfish has really been active this week; we got reports of good catches on both live bait and small spinnerbaits fishing coves with standing timber along with fishing flats with live bait; fishing just off the bottom.
