Editor’s note: Reports this week are putting most bass on the nest in our area. The western end and in southern area of the state have many lakes where the fish are done or close to being done. The first good bluegill spawn is under way and the musky have been the most active all year. If you manage to get on the water, tell us how you did.
Cave Run Lake: Spawning in the river and on the main lake is being reported. Muskie are visiting the shallows and crappie are active. Musky: The fishing continues to be good this week, as the bass move to spawning beds, reports have reinforced the activity of musky in shallow water. Crankbaits, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits and even lipless crankbaits have all caught fish. Smallmouth Bass: Reports would indicate that the smallmouths are done nesting and moving to staging areas to recover. Largemouth Bass: Reports this week put most of the fish on beds. Bass have been spotted spawning in most areas of the lake. The buck bass have been active using crankbaits, worms and creature baits. White Bass: We had reports this week that the white bass are moving back out of the river, as they show up chasing shad, small crankbaits and inline spinners have had good success this week. Crappie: Some crappie are still nesting, but most are done. The black crappie tend to stay in shallow water while the white crappie move back to deeper structure. Catfish: Catfish have been active this week both in crappie spawning areas and bass spawning areas. They have been taken on both lures and live bait.
Grayson Lake: Water levels are a little over summer pool this week. Upper areas of the lake were reported muddy. Lake temperatures have improved to near 67 degrees. Bass: It’s time for these fish to be moving into shallow water to spawn. However, most of the fish we have seen this past weekend came from shaky head jigs fishing secondary points. Crappie: Fair to good fishing swim jigs around down timber and brush piles. Crappie is spawning in this lake. We expect to get some good reports in the next couple of weeks.
Greenbo Lake: This lake is producing both trout and bass. Water temperature was 66 to 68 degrees. Bass: The bass has been reported spawning while some fish are still hitting shakey head jigs on secondary points. Trout: Greenbo was stocked in January with 5,500 rainbow trout. While some trout can still be taken using normal methods, trout are being taken on blade and spinnerbaits too. Catfish: Good, catfish are reported as fair this week fishing very early and mid-day. Fish live bait, chubs, small bluegill and cut bait. Bluegill: The bluegill are nesting in all areas of the lake and some good catches of both shell-cracker and sunfish have been reported this week.
Ohio River: The river has been high and reports put the bass in the flooded trees. Largemouth Bass: Reported staging to spawn. However the river temperature remains lower than most of the lakes and with high water flooding most spawning areas, these fish are behind most of our lakes. Bass have been caught this week on spinnerbaits, crankbaits and jigs. Below the Dam: With water levels unstable dam fishing reports were poor but should improve. Sauger and Walleye: Twin tail grubs on ¼ oz. ball jigs are still the best producers using slow bump the bottom retrieves. We also got reports that running a two jig setup has been producing better strikes. One of the two baits needs to be a little off the bottom. Bass: Above the dam has been fair this week. As the water returns to normal, we expect to see this fishing rebound. Catfish: Fish have been active this week with reports of good catches in back water areas using live bait.
Yatesville Lake: Reports of good catches came in this week. Crappie, bass and bluegill are all active. Yatesville is stable at summer pool with upper regions reported heavily stained. Water temperature is 66 to 70. Bass: Our reports this week said that the bass were moving into shallow water. There were also reports of spawning. Fish were taken on shaky head jigs, crankbaits and topwater baits during low light periods. Crappie: good. Fish the edges of flats in channel bends and old fish attractors using 32 oz. white crappie jigs or live bait. Bluegill: The bluegill started spawning this week. Good numbers were reported active using night crawlers and small jigs fishing spawning beds.
