Fishing Report June 5

This fishing report was compiled for the week of June 5, 2013

Editor’s note: Little has changed this week. Most of our lakes have bass spawning or finishing the spawn. The bluegill is nesting and should begin finishing by the end of this week. White bass are showing up in jumps in some locations. Crappie is moving to summer locations. Muskie is active feeding on flats and around weed beds and catfish are raiding bluegill nests and have been taken on small spinners, jigs and live bait.

Cave Run Lake: Spawning is being reported both on the river and in the main lake. Muskie are visiting the shallows and crappie are active. Musky: The muskie fishing continues to be good this week while bass are spawning. Reports have reinforced the activity of muskie in shallow water. Crankbaits, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits and even lipless crankbaits have all caught fish. Smallmouth Bass: Reports of good catches on spinnerbaits and lipless crankbaits have come in this week. Largemouth Bass: Reports of spawning bass continue to come in. However, we also got reports of bass hitting spinnerbaits, crankbaits and weightless worms as the bass finish spawning. White Bass: We had reports this week that the white bass are moving back out of the river. They have shown up chasing shad, and small crankbaits and inline spinners have had good success this week. Crappie: Some crappie have finished spawning and are now moving into their summer locations. Catfish: Active this week in spawning areas. Fish have been taken on both lures and live bait.

Grayson Lake: Water levels are a little over summer pool this week and upper areas of the lake were reported muddy. Lake temperatures have improved to near 67 to 72 degrees. Bass: Are reported still spawning on this lake. Some fish were caught this week on weightless worms, shakey-head jigs and spinnerbaits fishing road-beds and points. Crappie: Fair to good, fishing swim jigs around down timber and brush piles. Crappie are spawning in this lake. We expect to get some good reports in the next couple of weeks. Catfish: Reported improving, fishing spawning areas with night crawlers and minnows.

Greenbo Lake: This lake is producing trout, catfish, bluegill and bass. Water temperature are 68 to 74 degrees. Bass: The bass are reported finished with the spawn and to be raiding bluegill nests this week. Bass have been taken on crankbaits, spinnerbaits and plastic worms. Trout: Fair, success is being reported with live bait and small spinners in the heads of coves.  Catfish: Good, fishing very early and mid-day, fish live bait, chubs, small bluegill and cut bait. Bluegill: The bluegills are nesting in all areas of the lake. Some good catches of both shell-cracker and sunfish have been reported this week.

Ohio River: The river is getting better as the water starts to become stable. Largemouth Bass: Reported spawning this week. Buck bass have been active; baits that reported success are small spinners, crankbaits and jigs. Below the Dam: Walleye and Sauger: Twin tail grubs on ¼ oz. ball jigs are still the best producers, using slow bump the bottom retrieves. We also got reports that running a two jig setup has been producing better strikes. One of the two baits needs to be a little off the bottom. White Bass: Becoming active as they begin to chase shad, some reports of schooling fish are starting to show up.  Bass: Above the dam has been fair this week. As the water returns to normal we expect to see this fishing to rebound. Catfish: Have been active this week with reports of good catches in backwater areas using live bait.

Yatesville Lake: Reports of good catches came in this week. Crappie, bass and bluegill are all active. Yatesville is stable at summer pool with upper regions reportedly heavily stained. Water temperature is 66 to 70 degrees. Bass: Our reports this week say that the bass were moving into shallow water with continued spawning. Fish were taken on shaky head jigs, crankbaits and top-water baits during low light periods. Crappie: good. Fish the edges of flats in channel bends and old fish attractors using 32 oz. white crappie jigs or live bait. Bluegill: The bluegill started spawning this week and some good numbers were reported active using night crawlers and small jigs fishing spawning beds in water as deep as 8 feet.
