Eastern Kentucky Fishing Report

This fishing report was compiled for the week of Oct. 30, 2012

Editor’s note: I have been on the water for the last 12 days and while I have compiled all the reports for this week, I need to explain a few things. This time of the year, the fish patterns are changing according to the weather of the day. If a front is moving in, and days are in the mid-to-low sixties the fish have been off the bank pursuing shad in channel areas. If we get a warm day in the mid 70s to low 80s the fish are moving up on the flats. You have to tailor your approach to the day you’re facing.

Cave Run Lake: The lake continues the fall drawdown. It is at 727 feet above sea level. Winter pool is 724 feet, while summer pool is 730 feet. The lake is falling at a rate of about on tenth of a foot a day so many for your favorite fishing holes may be holding skinny water right now. Be careful.   Musky: good. I managed to catch three over the last 12 days. On the main lake inline spinners and bulldawgs were the most effective baits. Fish weed flats and laydown timber.  Bass: The smallmouth have been active on crankbaits and blade baits in the dam area. Points and riprap areas have been producers this past week. Largemouth Bass continue to be active. Like I stated my editor’s note, on warm days the fish have been on the flats and on the cool and cloudy days the fish have been in the channel staging in the outside bends of the river. White Bass: I caught about 15 white bass while I was on the water. All of them came from flats on crankbaits just out of the blue. We would catch a few at a time, so it was clear they were chasing shad onto the flats. Crappie: We had reports of crappie being taken on live bait fishing channel trees as well as crankbaits in some schooling shad near the heads of creeks.

Grayson Lake: Grayson has been seeing some good bass this past week. The lake is falling slowly with good color. Bass: fair to good. The bass fishing has been the best in the heads of coves this past week. Use crankbaits and spinnerbaits. Any standing wood or laydown trees have been good areas to fish. Crappie: fair. Fish swim jigs around down timber. Let the jig fall into the 10 to 12 foot range. Yellow 1/8 jigs have had the best success for the last few weeks. Catfish: good. Fish live bait using drop lines and trotlines in headwater areas.

Greenbo Lake: The lake is in good shape, clear and stable. Bass: continued reports came in this week of bass being taken on topwater in the early-morning hours fishing the dam area. We also had some report of bass being caught in the heads of creeks on slow-rolling spinnerbaits, including 3/8 oz. willow leaf chrome blades with white skirts. Trout: Greenbo was stocked on the Oct. 11.  At this point these fish have scattered. Some success has been reported casting the banks with blade baits.   Catfish: Good, fishing very early and at night with live bait, chubs, small bluegill and cut bait.

Ohio River: Fishing in the river was reported good this week. Some breaking fish on both sides of the dam were reported.  White bass: Good, watch for breaking fish at the mouth of creeks. Use inline spinners and small crankbaits. Largemouth Bass: good. Small baits continue to be the best baits, including: crankbaits and small spinnerbaits. Fish discharge areas and Creek points. Below the Dam: Sauger and Walleye are reported improving. Twin tail grubs on ¼ oz. ball jigs are beginning to produce. Use slow bump the bottom retrieves. Striped Bass: We had some report this week that stripers were active on pencil-poppers. Watch for breaking fish and make long casts. Bass: fair to good. Fish early before the water temperature has a chance to warm up at points, weeds and lay-down trees. Spinnerbaits and ¼ oz. buzzbaits have produced fish this week. Catfish: good. Reports of catfish are still coming in. However, while drop-lines and trotlines report the most success, we got a few reports this week of good catches from bank fishermen using cut bait fishing just after sun-rise.

Yatesville Lake: As water levels fall you must be careful in the upper area of the lake. Bass: Spinnerbaits and crankbaits have been the hot lures this past week! Fish the coves and creek heads. Locating shad is the ticket to finding fish on this lake. Warm days will put the fish onto the flats. Crappie: good. Fish the edges of flats in channel bends and old fish attractors using 32 oz. white crappie jigs tipped with live minnows. We have also had some reports of catches fishing at night under lights using live bait, reports suggest the crappie are in 15 feet of water near channel points.

Editor’s note: The fishing is getting a little unpredictable right now. The fronts play a big part in the movement of the shad. When the weather turns mild, the fish seem to get active and a cold front gives them lockjaw. Watch the weather, and remember that the middle of the day has been this best time to be on the water this week. The shad have moved to the back of many coves and soon may retreat to deep water.

Cave Run Lake: The lake continues through the fall drawdown and is about 3.5 feet below summer pool and continuing to fall slowly. The fishing has moved to the middle of the day when the water is the warmest. The sun is your friend this time of year, and can spur a frenzy of activity. Musky: Good, the musky have been active this past week and have produced some very good catches. Bulldawgs, spinnerbaits and jerkbaits have all been big winners. If you were waiting on the best time to be on the water, it has arrived.  Bass: The smallmouth have been as active as they have been all year during the past week in the dam area. Fish small deep-diving crankbaits and hair jigs tipped with 101 pork frog kickers. Use brown jig and orange kicker on a 3/8oz. ball jig. Largemouth Bass continue to be active, but you must fish a fall shad pattern. The bass are staged to feed on shad as they pass staging areas, including channel  trees, both standing and lying long ways. From the deeper banks, use deep-diving crankbaits with a pause and retrieve cadence. Slow the bait down after the pause. White Bass: There were reports this week of white bass showing up in the jumps. Check the heads of the major creeks and river. Use small inline spinners and small crankbaits casting past the breaking fish and reeling through the active fish. White bass were also active in the heads of creeks where shad were working. Crappie: We had reports of crappie being taken on live bait fishing channel trees as well as crankbaits in some schooling shad near the heads of creeks.

Grayson Lake: Grayson has been producing this year much better than it has in the recent past. If it has been a while since you have visited this lake you might want to give it another try. The lake is falling slowly with good color. Bass: Continues to be fair to good fishing, and is becoming better in the middle of the day. Grayson has produced some good fish this week both in the dam area and in the protected coves. Spinnerbaits, crankbaits and jigs have been baits to use. Crappie: fair. Fish with swim jigs around down timber. Let the jig fall into the 10 to 12-foot  range. Yellow 1/8 jigs have had the best success for the last few weeks. Catfish: good. Fish with live bait using drop lines and trotlines in headwater areas.

Greenbo Lake: The lake is in good shape, clear and stable. Bass: Continued reports came in this week of bass being taken on topwater in the early morning hours fishing the dam area. Trout: Greenbo was stocked two weeks ago with trout. At this point these fish have scattered and some success has been reported casting the banks with blade baits.   Catfish: Good, fishing very early and at night with live bait, chubs, small bluegill and cut bait.

Ohio River: Fishing in the river was reported good this week. Some breaking fish on both sides of the dam were reported.  White bass: good. Watch for breaking fish at the mouth of creeks. Use inline spinners and small crankbaits. Largemouth Bass: Good, small baits continue to be the best baits. Use crankbaits, small spinnerbaits while fishing discharge areas and creek points. Below the Dam: Sauger and Walleye are reported improving. Twin tail grubs on ¼ oz. ball jigs are beginning to produce. Use slow bump the bottom retrieves.

Yatesville Lake: I didn’t get any new reports on this lake this week. I will update this lake again next week but this report should still be current. Bass: Topwater both early and lake is where some of the largest bass caught this week were reported. Pop R and Spooks claimed the big fish.  The best locations include old roadbeds and coves containing standing timber. Crappie: good. Fish the edges of flats in channel bends and old fish attractors using 32 oz. white crappie jigs tipped with live minnows. We have also had some reports of catches fishing at night under lights using live bait, reports suggest the crappie are in 15 feet of water near channel points.

Editor’s note: I have been working hard to find out what going on around our eastern Kentucky lakes. While many fishermen have thinned out on our lakes, the fishing continues to be good. Musky, bass and crappie all are active and it’s a great time to be on the water. I also want to give a call out to the Bow Hunters: Bag a big one and send me your pictures.

Cave Run Lake: The lake continues to be in the fall drawdown, it is 2.6 feet below summer pool and falling slowly. While rains have stained some feeder creeks the lake remains clear.  Musky: Good to excellent. The musky has been active this past week and have produced some very good catches. Bulldawgs, spinnerbaits and jerkbaits have all been big winners this week. If you were waiting on the best time to be on the water, it has arrived.  Bass: Smallmouth: The smallmouth have been active this past week in the dam area.
