Spring; is this what we had this weekend? It’s been as elusive as trying to catch a running Easter bunny in the mud. Spring continues to drag its way here slower than any of us expected, however, competitive fishing has started even if the lakes are about three weeks behind were they are normally.
All the tournaments I’ve had a chance to hear about have been less impressive than usual. We had a tournament on Cave Run this past week; it was coined the Renegade Tournament. It took nine pounds to win; second place was a single fish and only four fish made up the total weight in. The tournament had 74 boats in all, in anyone’s book that’s a tough day.
I only bring this up because any tournament held in our area is going to be hard to put fish in the boat, you couple that with the fact, the high school teams are made up of kids with limited experience you can see how it could be a challenge to do well.
This tournament was the Johnson Central Open; they were 10 teams in the competition. It was held on Yatesville Lake, Johnson Central won the tournament. They had two fish, which were 2.36 lbs. each. Boyd County came in second with one fish that weighted 1.69 lbs.
The Boyd County team of Reese Rife and Joseph Thomas had the 1.69 weight to put Boyd County on the board and take the second-place position in the tournament. The next tournament will be held at Yatesville Lake April 13th this will be the Regional finals and will be determine what teams will attend the finals to be held on Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake April 25th-28th that tournament will be hosted by Murray State University.
I hope to be able to cover the April 13th Tournament. I really want to see this team develop its fan base. Come out and see the weigh-ins and support the Boyd County Bass Fishing Team.
While fishing across the tri-state has been much the same as gardening, everyone is ready to see the leaves popping out, cherry blossoms splashing color across this drab landscape, and the warmth from the sun as it strikes across your face, it won’t be long now.
I also would like to thank all the guys who have sent me pictures all winter, and kept me up to date on all the lakes across Kentucky. It’s only with your help that we can help everyone who wants to enjoy what Kentucky has to offer.
If you like this column, it also doesn’t hurt to drop me a line and tell what you would like to see us cover. Until next time… Take a kid fishing pass on the treasure of being outside.
