This fishing report was compiled for the week of May7, 2013

Editor’s note: For the first time in a few weeks, our weather has been fairly stable with rains just showing up at the end of our reporting period, this has continued to improve the fishing and bring us closer to the spawning of many fish in our reporting area. If you get out on the water let us know how you did, it will help us make more accurate reports of our lakes. chris@ashlandbeacon.com

Cave Run Lake: The lake is just about summer pool this week, water temperatures have been all over the place for 63 to 67 this should trigger bass to move to spawning areas. Musky: The muskie fishing is good this is the time of the year when we see muskie up in the rivers and creeks as the go through the motions of spawning; fish have been active hitting jerkbaits lipless crankbaits. We will expand the Cave Run report after the PMTT tournament results. Bass: Smallmouth: reports of smallmouth are spotty fishing weightless worm rigs. Largemouth Bass: We covered Cave Run this week in our main story. Fish were caught on lipless crankbaits, jerkbaits and A-rigs fishing flats, down tree-tops and points where crappie is staging to nest. White Bass: white bass has been showing up in the headwater areas of Cave Run, North Fork, Licking River, Beaver Creek all should see the white bass run to begin; the KFWL has reported that Cave Run has a very good population of white bass in the 11 to the 15-inch range this year. If you have success let us know. Crappie the crappie are starting to heat up as they begin to move into spawning areas, brush piles down trees and other bank structure and places worth checking out the crappie should be in the first 10 feet of water while they are getting ready to spawn, they spawn when the water gets 55 at 5 feet deep.

Grayson Lake: Water levels are approaching summer pool this week; lake temperatures have improved to near 65 degrees. Bass: reported fair and improving, fishing jerkbaits and plastic worms on flats some fish have also been caught fishing crankbaits around discharge areas in protected coves. Crappie: fair to good, fishing swim jigs around down timber and brush piles. crappie are spawning in this lake we expect to get some good reports in the next couple of weeks.

Greenbo Lake: This lake is producing both trout and bass. Water temperature was 66-68degrees. Bass: The bass have been reported spawning in this lake. We don’t encourage removing these fish while they are spawning so we will not cover methods this week. Trout: Greenbo was stocked on the 30th of Jan. 2013 with 5,500 rainbow trout… While some trout can still be taken using normal methods some trout this week have been reported taken on blade and spinnerbaits. Catfish: slow, catfish was reported as slow this week fishing very early and mid-day, fish live bait, chubs, small bluegill and cut bait.

Ohio River: The River is coming on right now if the water continues to clear we look for the bass fishing to get hot. Largemouth Bass: reported good this week, using jerkbaits, crankbaits and spinnerbaits around rocky point’s backwater areas and around spawning areas. Below the Dam: Sauger and Walleye with water levels beginning to improve the sauger bite is good, Twin tail grubs on 1/4oz. Ball jigs are still the best producers, using a slow bump the bottom retrieves. We also got reports that running a two jig setup has been producing better strikes. One of the two baits needs to be a little off the bottom. Stripe Bass We had no reports of stripers this week. However, it’s time for this fishing to kick in if you have success this week let us know. Bass: above the dam has been fair to good this week. Some fish were reported on flats around old spawning beds. The water has been warming up fast. We expect to get reports of pre-spawn staging or even spawning. Catfish: We didn’t get any reports from catfish anglers this week.

Yatesville Lake: This lake has been stable this week at near summer pool. Water temperatures are creeping into the mid-60s. Bass we had a lot of reports on this lake this week. Fish were caught on weightless worms, jigs and even crankbaits; bass have been in a pre-spawn stage holding on structure near spawning areas. Crappie: good. Fish the edges of flats in channel bends and old fish attractors using 32 oz. white crappie jigs or live bait.
