Kenlake and Rough River State Parks to Host Bowfishing Events
By: Bob Adams
FRANKFORT, Ky. - If you want to learn about the growing
sport of bowfishing, or if you're already accomplished at the sport and want to compete, two Kentucky
state resort parks have events for you coming up this month and May.
On Friday and Saturday April 17-18, Kenlake State Resort Park is presenting Bowfishing 101, a free introduction to
the sport. The event includes a classroom style seminar and also a hands-on demonstration with instruction.
While in the classroom, you will learn about the basic bowfishing equipment, types of fish to hunt, safe
practices, the times of the year best suited for bowfishing, how to handle the fish after they have been
shot, and proper fish cleaning and disposal. You will learn to shoot by means of a simulated hunt situation.
Once you are familiar with shooting we'll take you for a target shoot with prizes awarded. In your outing, you will
usually be hunting for carp, gar, buffalo, catfish and drum. Bowfishing is the fastest growing archery activity today
that everyone can participate in, making this a great family outing. The agenda is as follows: A meet and greet on
Friday, with the seminar beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, with door prizes and awards given out all day.
Package price: $59.00 for room (excluding tax).
For more information, call the park at 800-325-0143. Kenlake State Resort Park is located at 542 Kenlake Road on the
beautiful shores of Kentucky Lake in Aurora. The park features a lodge, cottages, restaurant, and camp ground with
views of the lake. There is transient dockage to accommodate boats up to 100 feet. A launching ramp is available
as well as a marina store with gas and diesel fuel available.
On Saturday May 9, National Youth Bowfishing Day, Rough River Dam State Resort Park will host the
Passing on the Tradition Kentucky Youth Bowfishing Championship. This tournament is open to those 17
years old and under. Awards will be presented in all divisions as well as an Overall Tournament Champion
Award. Registration will be held from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. (CDT). Entry fee is $10 per child, and each
child must have an adult present. They must also attend a pre-shoot meeting at 9:45 a.m. to go over
safety, tournament instructions, rules and regulations.
The tournament will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Refreshments and other activities will be provided. For more
